Zooming Out: A Practice to Keep Moving

Written by Jarrod Matteson | Jun 30, 2025 7:36:21 PM

Some weeks feel like a hundred tangled threads. The tighter I try to hold them, the more they knot. Over the years, I’ve learned (often the hard way) that the answer isn’t to grip tighter. It’s to zoom out.

When I’m “zoomed in,” everything feels tight: my shoulders, my jaw, my breath. My mind starts telling stories about not having enough time or resources, and my heart feels the heavy weight of overwhelm and trying to hold it all together. In these moments, my nervous system is signaling: too much, too close, too fast.

Zooming out feels like an exhale. It’s a mental letting go, a shift from the immediate to-do list to the bigger picture. My body loosens, my breath deepens, and my emotions shift from overwhelm to a lighter but grounded confidence and sense of possibility. My mind becomes free to reprioritize, to remember why I’m doing what I’m doing, and to move forward with clarity.

When I’m zoomed in, it’s like staring at a road covered in potholes, heavy traffic, and sharp turns. Every obstacle feels urgent and insurmountable. But when I zoom out and rise above the immediate mess, the road straightens. I can see where I am, where I want to go, and the path forward becomes clearer and more spacious.

Sometimes zooming out is as simple as stepping away for a walk or a workout. Other times, it’s a few conscious breaths. This is my favorite breathwork Tool I reach for between meetings on those days when the meetings and calls are stacked back-to-back. And at the foundation, it’s my morning Practice of breathwork and qigong that sets the tone for the day, helping me hold a wider perspective from the start.

A moment that stands out for me recently was when I was creating The Infinite Reset. On paper, it didn’t feel like the right time. We already had a lot of new ideas for Prasada and The Infinite Center. The thought of building something new felt heavy, like adding one more thing to an already full plate. My mind started its usual chorus: “There’s no space for this. You don’t have time.”

So I zoomed out.

I stepped back and remembered why Alice and I created The Infinite Center in the first place: to offer the tools, practices, and journeys we wish we had years ago when we were overwhelmed and searching for more. When I reconnected to that vision, my mind expanded, my heart opened, and creativity started to flow. From that zoomed-out place, The Infinite Reset transformed from just another task to a necessary expression of our mission, built from the heart, and I was able to take action with clarity and ease.

These moments of feeling “zoomed in” aren’t failures. They’re gentle reminders from our deeper wisdom that are invitations to pause and exhale. They are signals to come back to ourselves and the deeper why behind all we do.

Next time you find yourself gripping tighter, buried in the details, or convinced there isn’t enough time, try zooming out. One breath at a time, you can reconnect to a wider, truer view of your life.

We created The Infinite Reset to explore how breath, awareness of habits and patterns, and taking small daily shifts can change the way we meet pressure and create space for what matters most. Registration closes July 1 for our founding cohort, and we begin the week of July 7.

One breath at a time, it’s possible to meet overwhelm differently.

What helps you zoom out when you feel the pressure building?
